A tribute to senior pets. What is a Sanctuary Dog?

Sanctuary dogs tend to fall into two categories.

The first type is the adoptable yet overlooked, sometimes older, sometimes younger, sometimes maybe not the best looking in the bunch. These are dogs that still have so much love to give and have sat waiting very patiently for a home to call their own. For these special sweethearts we are still looking for their "forever" home. If you have an empty place in your heart that needs filling -- consider a sanctuary dog.

The second type of sanctuary dogs are the ones that will live at the rescue forever. These dogs tend to either suffer from health problems, extreme shyness or just simply senior citizens. The rescue will care for these dogs with the best care we can give until it is their time to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Chloe is approx. 8 years old and 30lbs. She was rescued from the Caroline County Pound where she was turned in by her owner...her crime...'she won't hunt'. Chloe is not a hunter, she's a lover! This beagle girl has those soulful eyes that just melt your heart. She is taller then your average beagle but not by much. Chloe would be happiest as the only pet with a fenced yard to play in and just be a dog. This girl would be a wonderful, loyal & loving companion.

Hi! Here at the kennel they call me EVAN and they say I'm quite the handsome boy with lots of potential (which I hear is a good thing). I am approx. 8 years old and 30lbs. I am a beagle mix so they say because I have a natural docked tail like a jack russell but look like a beagle. I am a little shy but warm up quickly and want to be loved. A home with a fenced yard will be needed for me and a doggie friend would be terrific. I do have a small medical problem but am easily maintained on an inexpensive medicine. If your looking for a gentle, quiet yet happy playful boy then come check me out! I am neutered, current on all shots, heartworm negative and microchipped.

Penny Lane
Penny Lane

The last couple years during hunting season the rescue had PennyLane wander up and was finally taken up on the offer to give her sanctuary.  She is about 11 years old and has a damaged front leg from an old injury. She is a sweet, loving soul who surely earned the right to retire from hunting.  All hunting will now be done in the safety of a fenced yard with a soft bed and good food when she is done...we are so happy to have her!

Peanut is approx. 7 years old and came to the rescue in August 2007.  She was a stray that was rescued from under a shed with new puppies.  Peanut is a dollbaby of a beagle but can be shy starting out.  She does well with most other dogs but prefers her canine friends to be male.  Once you’ve won this girl’s heart she is all yours. Peanut just needs a loving, patient owner willing to work a little to get a lot of love in return!
